Music Program

At Pomo Elementary, music is an integral part of every student's education. Our comprehensive, standards-based music program is designed to spark creativity, build confidence, and develop a lifelong appreciation for the arts — beginning in Transitional Kindergarten and continuing through 6th grade.

How Do Students Participate?

All students in Transitional Kindergarten through 6th grade receive weekly music instruction from one of our two credentialed district music teachers, who travel between school sites to provide consistent, standards-based lessons in every classroom.

Music instruction is thoughtfully woven into the broader school experience. Classroom teachers often reinforce musical concepts — such as rhythm, movement, and pattern recognition — within their daily lessons to support student engagement and learning across content areas.

Students also have opportunities to deepen their musical experience through the after-school program, where additional music enrichment is available throughout the year.

Performances

Pomo Elementary hosts two schoolwide performances each year to celebrate student learning and creativity:

  • Winter Performance — typically held in December
  • Spring Performance — typically held in April

While participation is optional, these events are a highlight of the school year. Performances give students the opportunity to showcase the skills they have developed, build confidence, and collaborate with their peers. They also bring our school community together, giving families and staff a chance to celebrate student growth and achievement.

Instruments

During weekly music classes, students are introduced to a variety of musical instruments. They learn to identify instruments, understand how each one produces sound, and recognize the role different instruments play within musical compositions. Learning is hands-on and engaging, giving students a rich foundation in musical literacy.

Music Across the School Day

Music at Pomo Elementary goes beyond the weekly lesson. Classroom teachers integrate musical strategies into everyday instruction, using rhythm, movement, and pattern-based activities to support learning in all subject areas. This schoolwide approach ensures that students experience the benefits of music throughout their day — not just during music class.
