Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID)
AVID is a nationally recognized college and career readiness program designed to help students develop the skills they need to succeed in rigorous academic courses and beyond high school. The program focuses on closing opportunity gaps by supporting students who have the potential to succeed with the right structure and guidance.
At Pomo Elementary, students learn to advocate for themselves, set goals, and take ownership of their learning — building a foundation for college, career, and lifelong success.
How Do Students Participate?
All students in Transitional Kindergarten through 6th grade participate in our schoolwide AVID program. AVID instructional strategies are implemented consistently across every classroom to support college and career readiness at every grade level.
Our primary AVID focus areas at Pomo Elementary are focused note-taking and the development of strong organizational skills. These foundational strategies help students become independent learners who are prepared for academic success.
College Week
Each year, Pomo Elementary hosts College Week, a schoolwide celebration of higher education. Every class researches and explores a specific college or university and participates in activities including a college parade and a virtual or in-person college tour experience. Guest speakers visit to share their personal college journeys, helping students begin to envision their own future educational pathways. College Week helps foster a strong college-going culture starting in the earliest grades.
Career Week
Each spring, Pomo Elementary holds Career Week. Students explore a variety of career options and complete interest inventories to better understand their strengths and aspirations. Career Week concludes with Career Day, when community members and professionals visit to share firsthand what their careers look like. Through these experiences, students begin connecting their education to their future goals and dreams.
Our College-Going Culture
At Pomo Elementary, we believe that college and career readiness begins long before high school. Through AVID strategies, signature events, and daily classroom practices, we are building a community where every student believes in their potential and has the tools to pursue it.
