School Site Council
Your Voice in Our School
At Obsidian Middle School, we believe that the best decisions for our students are made together. The School Site Council (SSC) is the formal body through which parents, teachers, staff, students, and community members come together to shape the direction of our school — and every family is welcome to be part of it.
What Is the School Site Council?
The School Site Council is the school community's representative governing body, established by California law to ensure that the people most affected by how a school operates have a meaningful say in how it runs. The underlying belief is simple: education works best when parents, teachers, administrators, and community members are working toward the same goal — the success of every student.
The SSC is composed of two equal groups. One half represents school staff, including the principal. The other half represents parents, students, and community members. Together, they make decisions about the school's academic focus and how categorical funding resources are used to support student achievement.
What Does the SSC Do?
The School Site Council meets regularly throughout the school year to fulfill several important responsibilities, including annually developing and approving the Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA), reviewing and revising the School Safety Plan, developing the site-level parent involvement policy and advising the district on its district-level policy, reviewing the school-parent compact (as a Title I school), and advising the district in the development of the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP).
In short, the SSC helps ensure that our school's programs, priorities, and resources are aligned with the needs of our students and community.
Get Involved
All parents and community members are welcome to attend SSC meetings. Elections for council membership are held each fall and periodically throughout the year as vacancies arise. Serving on the School Site Council is a meaningful way to contribute to your school community and help shape the experience of every student at OMS.
If you're interested in joining the School Site Council or would like more information about upcoming meetings, please call the school office at (707) 994-6447 and let one of our secretaries know. We'd love to have you at the table.
