College Planning Checklist

Start here — this checklist walks you through the key steps by grade level so you always know what to do next.

Your Higher Education Options

There is no single right path after high school. Here's an overview of the main options available to LLHS students.

California State University (CSU)

The CSU system is California's largest four-year university system, with 23 campuses across the state offering hundreds of degree programs. CSU is a great option for students seeking an affordable, high-quality four-year degree in a wide range of fields.

Application Filing Period

October 1 – November 30 (for the following fall)

University of California (UC)

The UC system includes 9 campuses and is known for its world-class research programs and highly competitive admissions. UC campuses offer a broad range of undergraduate majors and are a strong option for students with strong academic records who are looking for a rigorous university experience.

Application Filing Period

October 1 – November 30 (for the following fall)

Note: Like CSU, UC requires A-G coursework and competitive GPA. No grades below a C- may be used toward UC/CSU admission requirements.

Woodland Community College — Lake Campus

The Lake County Campus of Woodland Community College (WCC) is your local community college, right here in Lake County. WCC is an excellent starting point for students who want to complete two years of general education, transfer to a four-year university, or earn a career technical education certificate.

Community college is a cost-effective, flexible path — and many students who begin at WCC go on to transfer to UC or CSU campuses.

Dual Enrollment for Current LLHS Students:

High school students in good standing may enroll in WCC coursework while still in high school. Tuition and fees are waived (students are responsible for the cost of books). See your counselor for enrollment details.

Financial Aid

FAFSA — Free Application for Federal Student Aid

The FAFSA is the first step to accessing financial aid for college. It's how you apply for federal grants, work-study programs, and federal student loans. The U.S. Department of Education distributes more than $120 billion annually through this program — don't leave money on the table.

Who Should Apply

Every student planning to attend any college, university, trade school, or vocational program should complete the FAFSA, regardless of family income. Many students are surprised by what they qualify for.

When to Apply

The FAFSA opens October 1 each year. Apply as early as possible — some aid is first-come, first-served.

College Entrance Exams

Most four-year colleges accept either the SAT or the ACT. Many students take one or both to see which score is stronger. It's a good idea to take your first exam in the spring of 11th grade so you have time to retake it if needed.

SAT

The SAT is offered several times per year. Free official practice is available through Khan Academy.

Explore Campuses — Virtual Tours

Not able to visit in person? Explore campuses from home with these free virtual tours. Seeing a campus — even virtually — can help you figure out what kind of environment feels right for you.

Talk to Your Counselor

College applications can feel overwhelming, but you don't have to figure it out alone. Your counselor can help you identify the right schools for your goals, review your application essays, verify your A-G course completion, and make sure you meet deadlines.

We encourage all juniors and seniors to schedule a college planning meeting early in the school year.
